Frequently Asked Questions
Can Milk Thistle reverse alcoholic liver damage?
Milk Thistle cannot completely reverse damage to liver cells due to alcohol overindulgence, however evidence shows that Milk Thistle assists with regeneration of damaged liver cells. Milk Thistle can therefore be used to assist in the prevention of liver damage.
Are there any contraindications or side effects with the use of Milk Thistle?
Milk Thistle is well known as a trusted natural remedy and if taken at therapeutic dose, there are no contraindications. At doses exceeding well known therapeutic levels, a mild laxative effect has been reported, possibly due to increased bile secretion and bile flow from the liver.
Is it safe to take Milk Thistle during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Since sufficient safety data is not available, we advise against it. However, under practitioner supervision, Milk Thistle can be used during breastfeeding.
Does Silymarin (the main active ingredient of Milk Thistle) lose its efficacy when removed from the Milk Thistle plant?
Most of the research, proving the efficacy of Milk Thistle, is done with an extract. Therefore, in extracted format, it delivers on the therapeutic claims.
If a patient has viral hepatitis, should they take Milk Thistle while they are sick or only afterwards during recovery?
Milk Thistle is a well-known therapy to support the management of chronic and acute viral hepatitis. Milk Thistle can therefore be taken while someone is ill and is then recommended to be used under practitioner supervision.
Can I take Natrodale Milk Thistle Liver Remedy if I have a fragile stomach?
Most definitely! Natrodale Milk Thistle Liver Remedy helps to counteract the feelings of nausea and has no negative effects on a fragile stomach.
Is Natrodale Milk Thistle Liver Remedy safe to use?
Milk Thistle extract is a well studied, natural herbal remedy, and is virtually devoid of any side effects if used in the correct dosage. Since Silymarin (the active component in Milk Thistle) stimulates liver and gall bladder activity, it may have a mild and transient laxative effect in some people. Other side effects documented are headaches, nausea and skin rash but these are extremely rare. Milk Thistle has not been tested in pregnant and breast-feeding women and its safety in these patient groups is therefore unknown.
How do people abuse their livers, apart from excess alcohol use or muscle-toning supplements?
Over-indulgence in fatty foods can also damage your liver.
Does it cancel out my oral contraceptive?
There is no evidence proving that Milk Thistle will increase, or decrease, the effectiveness of your oral contraceptive.
